Careers Day 09

With the holidays only weeks away that means high school is coming up fast, Room 3 of Pukekohe Intermediate organised and ran a 2009 Year 8 Careers Day. Employees from across the district with exciting jobs traveled to our school on Thursday 19th of November. Each student in year 8 attended 3 lectures from the employers, 1 for each periodical block (2 periods). The employers gave speeches on how their job works, what their day involves and how to get into their industry.
In my day, I visited Murray Reid a pilot, Reon Graham Director of Sales at EMI Music, and Sam from Franklin County News.
All speakers were informative, and gave students a clear view of possible career options.

Room 23 Christmas Party

With christmas coming up fast and steady, Room 23 students have formed a committee to organise our class End of Year Chrsitams Party. The theme has been decided as Kiwi Christmas, and the food, decorations, dress code, and music will be based on this idea.
The comite includes. Danelle (Comitee Leader), Lachlan, Tegan, Bailee, Shannon, Leota, Sophie and Danielle Moore. This event will be held on Tuesday 8th December, but is invitation only.

Stepz

Walking into the hall for the first stepz lesson, everyone looked anxious and scared. No one wanted to dance with a boy. But once the music started, everyone forgot the first thought of fear and let loose. Simon is our dance instructor, he has taught us the 9 dances we will be performing on the night of the year 8 leavers social.
Now every student looks forward to the Friday lessons and cant wait til the Ball.

The Year 8 Leavers Social will be on Wednesday 9th of December, and the decided theme is Glitz and Glam.

Typing

\

In our class we do a regular typing test. Here are my results.

Major Production

Since the beginning of term 2, students and teachers have been hard at work preparing for the Major Production of Grease.
Auditions were done, and rehearsals were almost everyday. Major Production groups, such as Hair and Make-up, Props etc, met every Thursday and made sure our production was a winner for the crowd! Come stage night, everyone was roaring to go and excited about the performance ahead. There were two teams, Team Lightning and Team T-Birds, who both performed one matinee and one night performance each.
I was in the Lighting Team with Mr Pope, putting up the lights, being there for every performance to make sure everyone could see the actors.
All the performances were definitely crowd pleasers, and the cast had a ball.
Being even a small part of this amazing experience was a great opportunity and we had heaps of fun. I certainly cant wait for another Production!

Competitive Athletics

Since the beginning of Term 4, all classes have been training hard for the Competitive Athletics Day at Growers Stadium. Whether it be at team sport, or Year group athletics training, everyone joined in with the training leading up to the event.
On Tuesday 17th November, all competitive athletes walked to the Growers Stadium. The weather was not good, and the rain started coming. But it soon cleared up for the events. The day got under way with the start of track events, 1500m. The field events were running through the whole day in the middle of the track. There were some extraordinary efforts, and well earned placings and records. Grace Gill was the star of the day, beating the Auckland Champion to Champion High Jump record by 10cm.

Zone Netball

In term 3 Pukekohe Intermediate sent 4 Netball teams (two year 7 and two year 8) to Manurewa netball courts. Here we played 5-7 16 minute games of netball.

I got into the Year 8 Zone-b Netball team. We won 5 of our games and lost two. From this we were placed 3rd in the whole tournament for our grade. I was a little bit disappointed with the result because this ment we couldn't go to inter-zone.

Over all it was a fun and tiring day of netball.
We all played as a team and gave it our all.

Google Doodle

During the first few weeks of term 3, our class have been in the process of designing Google doodles, representing New Zealand.

Google was holding a competition for New Zealand kids to design a Google Doodle. A Google Doodle is a artistic drawing that involves the GOOGLE logo. The Google Doodle design has to have a my New Zealand (what we think of New Zealand) theme.

Each student was given a Google design sheet and we had come up with creative ideas to put on their Google Doodle.

As a class we voted for a Google Doodle that we liked the most, and we chose 8 to be to send to Google.

Good luck to anyone that was involved in this competition.

Website Designs

During the last 3 weeks of Term 3 Mrs Pearson and I have been working on a Maui's Dolphins awareness website. During Term 2 and 3 our mural has come a long way. Our Maui's Dolphins awareness Mural is finished!! The local artist we commissioned has been working hard to get our mural finished, and it looks great!

Our website was entered in the Netguide TVNZ 6 Multimedia Challenge. It was to educate the public on why the Maui's are so important and what our class is doing to help them.
I used weebly.com to complete my website. On this website we included: all the facts about Maui's, Risks - why they are so endangered, What you can do to make a difference, what our class did to make a difference and a photo gallery.

Here is a link to the Website

Take a look at our website and let everybody you know about us and the Maui's Dolphins.

Science Roadshow 2009

On the 20th July 2009 our class went to the Fonterra Science Roadshow. The Science Roadshow was set up in our hall. The Roadshow is showing over a preiod of 3 days Monday - Wednesday. The Science Roadshow travels all round New Zealand teaching kids about different science topics each year. Schools from as far as Hunua came to our school to see the roadshow and try out all the activities. The first show we saw was about carbon dioxcide and why our ozone layer is being destroyed. Then everyone got to walk around and try out all the exhibits. Then we watched another show about how sound travels through the air. It was a very enjoyable show and we look forward to seeing it in the future.

Science Fair Evaluation 2009

Science Fair 2009

This year it was compulsory for all year 8 students to complete a science fair project. We all completed a science board at home. I completed my photography board with Bailee. But Mrs. Pearson thought we could do better, so we all completed one in class time with another buddy. I completed my second Scientific Research board with Sophie. Our board is on the Taste And Tongue. Our end result is full of information and clear diagrams. Our presentation is clear and neat. Our Score was 90/100. The teacher that marked us was Mrs. Pearson. Here is my science fair evaluation.

Keynote

This year we have started to paint our Maui's Dolphins Mural. Tegan Shannon and I made this Keynote for our full school assembly.

Hard Materials

Every Day 3 during P1 and 2, half of room 23 go to hard materials. Our room is really lucky to go to hard materials because only two year seven classes get the opportunity to go. These classes are room 23 and room 33. Mr Sibley is our awesome hard materials teacher. He has taught us all of the safety rules and much more. So far into the term we have made a wooden animal or something that has wheels. The skills we learnt while making them were how to use a saw, drill holes and scroll sawing.
Everyone was successful with making this project. Our next project that we have almost finished is to make a wooden box. The skills we have learnt so far is how to hammer nails, gluing and we also are using skills that we already know. Everyone who goes to hard materials is having fun and really enjoying it. We can’t wait till next year so we can go there again.

Tapuae

Week 1, Term 2 Pukekohe Intermediate School held a school wide Tapuae competition. Dominique Hancock, Sports Co-ordinater from Room 45 was the organizer for this competition.

The teams were entered as buddy classes for the competition, and a maximum of 16 team players were able to take the court at once. Lupe Soapi of Room 23, and Abi Chapman of Room 36 were our team captains.

Students from the 2 teams played a number of games against a lot of challenging classes, playing a total of 3 games, making it into the quarter finals! In this game we went up against Room 13 & 45 and successfully came out with victory, which then took us into the Semi-finals.

Our first semi-final game was on Tuesday 16th on June and versed the same 2 classes. We had a really tough game and the weather was really rough, but even though we had to put up with that, Room 23 & 36 still came out with a win.

Wednesday 17th of June we played against Room 28 & 45. It was a very tough competition. But we pulled through with a win.

Then on Wednesday 25th June, Room 23 went head to head against Room 3 for the finals. It was a unpredictable game but Room 23 took out the game, and the whole competiton. Room 23 did not lose any game in this whole competition!

Exposition

The Use Of Mobile Phones While Driving Should Be illegal

The use of mobile phones while driving is seriously dangerous; it affects your ability to focus on the road ahead. Driving while using your mobile phone has taken lives and has injured many people.
Driving while talking on the phone increases the risk of being in a crash by 400%. It is the same as driving at the legal limit for blood alcohol. In 1996 the number of crashes in New Zealand was only eight. During recent years driving while using a mobile phone has taken six lives and injured 411 people.
The New Zealand government is drafting a proposal to ban cell phones while driving. If caught using your phone while driving you maybe fined $50 and receive twenty-five demerit points.
Vodafone and Telecom are backing this proposal. A survey conducted by the AA shows that 76% of people want the use cell phones while driving banned.
Your reaction time and concentration levels decrease when you use mobile phones while driving. It will take you longer to brake, you are more likely to tail gate the vehicle in front and you are nine times more likely to be in a fatality when you crash.
If you use your mobile phone while driving, you are not only putting yourself in danger, but other people on the road as well.
So is that call worth dying for?

Matariki Report

Introduction
Matariki is a celebration of the Maori New Year. It’s a time to come together and celebrate the unique place where we live, New Zealand. Matariki is also a cluster of seven. Matariki is sometimes called The Seven Sisters or Pleiades. In Japan they call them Subaru and the world rally car is named after Matariki.

The Celebration
In New Zealand there are all sorts of celebrations around Matariki. Traditional Maori would put up a look out post to watch the rise of Matariki. All Matariki Celebrations are a time to share ideas and learn from each other. All these celebrations will start when the new moon is seen.

World Wide
All over the world Matariki is celebrated all different ways. In Greece there are several different temples facing Pleiades (Matariki). In Japan they call Matariki Subaru. One of the bigger celebrations is in Polynesia. In Polynesia they celebrate Matariki with kites. All Matariki kites have 6 tails. When Matariki had been risen they would know it was time to gather sea food.

The Effect
As the year moves from autumn to winter the sunrise moves north. When the sunrise meets Matariki, it starts moving south again. This effect can be seen all over the world.

Nga Mahi a Te Rehia
For the whole term Pukekohe Intermediate will have fun and educational activities. Here are some:

D.A.R.E

This year Room 23 is in the process of learning about the D.A.R.E education program. Our class is learning about this program so we can make better choices through out our lives.

D.A.R.E stands for
Decision making
Assertiveness
Responsibility
Esteem.

This is it's old meaning
Drug
Abuse
Resistance
Education.

During this learning we had constable Andy come to our class on Wednesday the 18th of February, to talk to the class about the D.A.R.E education program.

In our class room we have our own D.A.R.E officer, her name is Constable Shree. Constable Shree has already discussed the choice box and our dare booklets. The choice box is a box where anyone in our class can put a question about anything involving dare or the police force. Our dare booklets are booklets where we do activities involving drug education. So far we have made a page about ourselves and how a Passive, Aggressive and a Assertive person acts.

D.A.R.E is a very fun and educational program we are all having fun learning it and we will be sad when we have to finish.

Coca Cola Netball

On Wednesday the 20th of May, Pukekohe Intermediate School are sending 12 - 15 teams of girls to Papakura Netball Centre.
The teams are going to compete in the Coca Cola Netball tournament.
Each team will play 5 - 6 games, each game will be 20 minutes long.

We have two divisions, competitive and social.
Year 7 and year 8 students had to trail to make the competitive teams. We plan to take 8 competitive and around about 6 social teams.

The two teachers incharge of the teams are Mrs. Pearson ( Rm 23 ) and Ms. Guise ( Rm 31 ) " I think we have some strong enough teams as long as they work together " and she also said " Team work comes with practice ". Mrs Pearson said, " If all the girls play as a team and do their best job we have a good chance of making the finals" .

This day will be an awesome opportunity to play against other schools and have some fun.
We will let you know the results.

The Digital Classroom 2009

It's a start of a new year, 2009, year 8, in room 23. This year in Room 23 we have 18 brand new flat screen apple i-mac computers in our class. So that means a whole lot more learning to do. We have 2009 programs this year, so everything is a little bit more advanced than the 2004 programs we had last year. There is 7 people who have a computer to them self, the rest have 1 between 2. In our class most people in room23 have stayed in the same class through to year 8. We also have 3 new students. We have the same teacher as last year. I'm looking forward to the year ahead so i can pick up new skills to use later in life.

Goals for 2009
To receive the Pukekohe Netball Trophy
To receive the Ganges Singh Trophy for leadership
To receive the Three R's Trophy for respect, responsibility, resolve
